Divinations: Rereading Late Ancient Religion

Daniel Boyarin, Virginia Burrus, Charlotte Fonrobert, Robert Gregg

This series extends and reframes scholarship on Mediterranean cultures in the late Roman imperial period. As its title suggests, the series distinguishes itself by a focus on religion and by an openness to innovative approaches that challenge both traditional disciplinary boundaries and conventional writing styles. Rather than assuming a particular heritage as a given and tracking its subsequent evolution, the series reopens the question of what constitutes "religion" or "culture" in late ancient Mediterranean societies, while tracking continuous and discontinuous processes of change, fragmentation, recombination, within and among traditions and communities.
